Grieving Together...
DPMS Families,
I want to inform you that it was with deep grief and sadness that we shared with students this morning that Mr. Nick Brown passed away at his home with family this past Saturday evening. You will recall that it was just over five weeks ago that I shared that Mr. Brown had been valiantly battling cancer for the past three years.
This is what we shared with students in their 1st period classes:
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Mr. Brown passed away this weekend on Saturday evening. As most of you know, Mr. Brown had been boldly fighting cancer for the last three years, when he took a turn for the worse in January. His family was with him Saturday and he was a warrior to the very end!
No doubt many of you may have upset feelings and questions about Mr. Brown’s death. I will try to answer what I can and we can use as much class time to do so, as needed. At times like this, it is okay to cry and normal to have many different feelings, including sadness, anger, and disbelief. It is also normal if it doesn’t hit you right away, these feelings can creep up when we least expect it.
Together, we can talk about whatever you may need or want to talk about. If I can not answer your questions, or you would like to talk to someone else, there are counselors and other support staff in the library and Mrs. Rosenberger’s room throughout the day. If you would like to go to talk to someone in these support rooms you may do so now.
DPMS is greatly impacted and saddened by the loss of our teacher, coach, colleague and friend! Our commitment to Ohana (family) and Laulima (working together) will be tested and fortified as we navigate this together. Our DPSD Crisis Intervention Team has provided additional counseling and staff to adequately support students and staff today and tomorrow. In addition, we will continue to monitor them in the days and weeks ahead to support them in the grieving process. We strongly encourage you to speak with your child tonight about this situation and how it specifically is impacting them. You may find this resource helpful to your child during this difficult time. https://grievingstudents.org
Our sincere condolences and prayers are with Mr. Brown’s family as they deal with the stinging loss of their husband, son and brother.
Most Sincerely,
Mr. Olietti
